When you work for a big company they are meant to look after your mental health but when you work for yourself who looks after you.
In this past year, most small business owners have been through hell. Not knowing where their next paycheck is coming from and falling through the cracks of government help. Trying to be resilient and positive but bring pushed to breaking point.
When everything around you is unstable, it is really important that you are stable within. And running a business is no different.
Working with clients over the past 10 months, I have started at one core block. Why are you running your business? What is the motivation and the benefit you get from running your own business? Is it the freedom, the fulfilled purpose, the fire it lights in our soul? Because without a deeper why, it is hard to stay fighting when the chips are against you.
I recommend as a small business owner you get a notebook, just for your mental health. And use it to express your feelings – excitement, concerns, or plan your vision for what’s to come. And to get started you could use these few prompts.
Writing Prompts
What is the life I want to create? How will my business support?
What does my ideal day, week, month or year look like in my life and business?
How do I feel in this moment and why?
What tension am I holding onto and where is it coming from?
What is my ego telling me that is unhelpful or unkind?
How can I nourish my mind, body and soul today?
As you answer these questions allow yourself to really think about them. To not worry about what someone else might answer. To not worry about the right or wrong answer. But just to feel into your body and know what is right for you.
The biggest danger to our mental health is trying to fit a mould that doesn’t exist. Trying to fit into a stereo type of what a business owner, mother, friend, sister, daughter etc should be.
This world of “should” is dangerous to our mental health because it stops us being truthful to our souls. It stops use hearing the voice inside thatshould guide us. Instead it keeps us small and within the boundaries set by someone else.
As a business owner, you need to know the only boundaries you should set are external to yourself. Boundaries to protect yourself, your energy, your time. Not boundaries that limit your expression or reach.
You are powerful, capable, and free. You support your mental health, you support your dreams and conquer your fears. And you support your community, family and self, just by being unapologetically you.
Being a Badass in Business
For me this means stepping into your expert power. Knowing you are the right person to do what you do.
And the only way we do this is by being kind to ourselves and setting boundaries with others. The reason why so many small businesses fail before they even begin is that their owners stall due to fear bought from the comparison. They are looking at people 2 years into the journey and saying I will never catch up with them. They are not realising that it is impossible to “catch up” when you are traveling on different paths to two different destinations. Again your why is important here.
Being a Badass in business is about understanding the growth that has to happen. It is about knowing you are never the end product but always on an evolution. About being ok with being the expert and the student at the same time. It is about investing the time, energy, and money into becoming the person you need to be in order to live the life you dream of. And you become a badass by getting more clarity!
What gets you more clarity?
